rolling stone: U2 in Their Own Words Bono and Co. on the band's lifespan, their aborted Rick Rubin sessions and the legacy of "Pop"
...outtakes from the RS cover-story on u2. the full article is not online, but it is pretty good. a few people have emailed me asking me to scan and post the full RS article. technical difficulties have prevented this from happening. if anyone has seens scans of the full article online already, please let us know.
this is the only part i accomplished scanning:

Yeah, the RS article is quite good.
I find it much better the last Q article ... too many questions on stuff that was old news & outside the music ... not enough on the new record!
why do people say "pretty good" if they mean "very good" or "good"? "pretty good" is damning with faint praise.
Pet peeve!
perhaps the faint praise is intended.
That online version has so many typos. Did Rolling Stone make some copy editing cutbacks or what?
C, what was wrong with the article in your view?
anon - you know, i take it back, the article is good and it is well-written and a good read. it has some interesting details that we didn't know before. i like the eno parts and the larry parts and even some of the bono quotes are not just totally rote bono.
it is not easy to write a unique article about u2 or to get bono to say a lot of things that aren't totally cliche and i appreciate that fact.
there is nothing wrong with this article.
still, i wish a few issues had been addressed that weren't (tour, fans, live nation, setlists, $250 tickets, stadiums vs. arenas, why why why?) ... and really would have liked some follow up on the songs of ascent album. have ALL of these songs been recorded already? why should we believe that it will come out so soon? don't they have a tour to prepare for? and then a tour to go on? and that spider-man crap?
speaking of which, the spidey talk with bono and then larry was great. i would have loved a follow up question to larry mullen when he mentioned it was just a bono and edge project and that he personally would have chosen a more left of field musical such as cirque du soleil. i mean...
also, the description of winter as some epic, like nothing u2 have done before song sort of confused me. unless this version referred to in the article is different than the sort of u2ey/coldplayish song called winter that they released on linear?
it also annoys me that anton corbijn did this photo shoot and all the pictures ... are not great. and that the caption on page 57 misidentifies the girl on the far left as bono's daughter when it is not. and the daughter who is pictured is identified as the wrong one. (but now i'm just being stalkerishly ridiculous...)
clearly if i typed this much, the article must have something going for it.
Let's face it. Not many people are Bill Flanagan.
u r not a stalker. me neither. unforgiveable error. havent read it all but read look forward to doing so - esp spidey stuff and i totally love your thoughts re the album. i will eat my hat if another album comes out in under 18 months. only coldplay managed that! ;-)
i actually do sort of believe it will come out in the next year, but i just think asking them when exactly it's going to be put together would have been a good question to have asked them.
also, did coldplay really manage that? they put out one album and then a bunch of b sides and remixes on an ep. that is not what u2 are talking about doing.
you're right - prospekts march is a mixtape. love it though. i am sick and unable to think clearly. so this sounds more like a zooropa n'est pas?
