well, well, well

the boys from calexico were up at the virgin megastore doing a free in-store show last night. it's only a few blocks from my office, so i ventured over after work. i got a good pretty spot and watched their whole set. they had two trumpets, an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, and just little egg-sized shakers for percussion. pretty rad.

i am not an uber fan, so i ignorantly thought they were going to be totally mellow. they rocked out a bit, and joey burns, the singer, was funny. he mocked the crowd for clapping, like "woah, a clap in new york city? no way!" he also joked around with jim morrison, whose picture was on the wall near the stage. in the middle of a song he just started saying "hey jim, how's paris?" and then started singing "riders on the storm."

i'm not gonna go putting their pictures in my wallet or anything, but for sure the next time someone asks me "do you like calexico?" i am totally gonna say "yeah, kind of."

seriously, their whole mariachi-americana-folk-country-twang-vibe is alright. check out their site to listen to some free live mp3s.

finally, what are you getting bono for his birthday?

check out the ebay auction of u2 concert photos. all proceeds go to the african well fund's "build a well for bono's birthday" fundraiser. the awf is not affiliated with bono, but it is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for building and maintaining wells in africa. it was formed by a group of u2 fans inspired by bono. all donations go directly to africare, a private, charitable u.s. organization.
